Session 12

Group restocked on food and supplies. Bors made sure everybody had at least two weeks worth of food. Eventually after much delay they finally set out. The company headed east as planned. They going was relatively easy along the road. All other travellers kept to themselves hiding their faces in the cowls of their cloaks.

The night passed without incident, in the morning the group head south into the forest. The forest was thick and dark, this made travel slow and awkward. A little game was visible, particularly in clearings. Calorn attempt to kill a rabbit, but made a fool of himself fumbling his bow. Night arrived early with the sun disappearing below the treeline. The group camped as normal with the Elves in a tree above the others.

About an hour after midnight Calorn realised that the creaking sounds he had been hearing for the last while were not natural. He quietly indicated to Tireal that something was moving in the darkness. Beneath them Bravd who was also on watch remained completely oblivious. Calorn started to prepare a spell while Tireal drew his bow. The Elves considered trying to warn Bravd but could see no way to do this without alerting the creature.

The creature continued to approach the camp, while the Elves gazed anxiously in its direction. Calorn managed to position himself so that he got a good view of the beast. With a start he realised it was a huge Troll. Gathering himself he cast his sleep spell. With a crash the troll collapsed to the ground. Finally Bravd realised something was afoot. He woke Thorin and approached the fallen monster. Thorin grabbed his weapons and kicking Bors awake followed Bravd.

There was quite a degree of indecision whether to try and kill the sleeping creature or to sneak away. Bravd finally decided to finish it and smote its skull with his warhammer. Before he got a chance to see if he had really killed it a huge roar erupted from another Troll who charged straight at Bravd.

Bors gaining the initiative struck the Troll in the thigh. It stumbled back towards its hiding place stunned and bleeding. Thorin and Bravd both attempt to strike it but it fended them off with its massive club. Calorn tried to knock it out quickly with a spell but it continued to fight. The party continued to batter at the stunned beast, only Thorin managed to land a strike. Tireal's arrow flew harmlessly over its head. Bravd missed so badly that he seemed to get confused and stumbled back swinging ineffectually. The Troll recovering turned and smashed Thorin on the head, The Dwarf instantly collapsed in a heap on the ground. The party continued to do very little damage to the beast, all the while Calorn was preparing another spell determined to get it right. The Troll struck again knocking the wind out of Bravd. Still the party could not seem to penetrate the beast defences. Once again the troll struck this time smashing Bors' left shoulder, the party could clearly here the sound of breaking bone. Calorn finally realeased his spell, to his delight the Troll collapsed to the ground. Bravd thinking that his puny strike had knocked out the troll grinned in victory.

Bravd and Bors seemed unsure what to do about the sleeping troll. Calorn hissed at Bravd to kill it and eventually the warrior finished the beast. Tireal and Calorn then clambered down form the tree. Tireal headed over to examine Thorin. The Dwarf was still alive but out cold. Bravd tried to awaken him by kicking him in the ribs. Needless to mention it failed. Tireal bound up Bors' broken shoulder. Calorn examine the first Troll realised it was not quite dead. He hurriedly called Bravd who killed it with another crushing blow to the skull. Tireal then set about the gruesome task of cutting out two of the Trolls teeth. Apparently he was into taking trophies.

Bors was quite upset with Calorn who he viewed as having taken no part in the fight. Between them Calorn and Tireal explained to him that it was Calorn who had knocked out the trolls. Bors seemed fascinated by this, he asked many questions and started to make plans about knocking out sentries. Bravd did not except that it was Calorn who had knocked out the second Troll. To him it seemed that his strike had rendered it unconscious. After some time the party settled down. The only event of not for the rest of the night was the awakening of Thorin.

In the morning Calorn searched for tracks left by the Trolls but none were visible. The group headed south. Two more days of travelling were required to gain the road. The days past peacefully. On reaching the road the party turned west for a short while before camping. In the morning the would continue their journey into the lands of Lord Fardwith.
