Well, here's what happened last Sunday.
Onwards.
With Slate now a cleric (as well as being a fighter) of The Passing as a
result of his saving from death by Grasst (an Angel of Death), he casts
his first spell on the unconscious Dersh, restoring him to consciousness.
The party are victorious over the bandits that were attacking the
village, and what's to be done with the barge, horses and armour is
discussed. None of the bandit's horses are still around, and Greebo and
Dersh head back to town to report the party's success, and to try to get
a man who can punt the barge around to the village. In the meantime Slate
and Los remove all the armour and equipment from the fallen bandits and
move them to the barge.
In due course the group are back at the village, and celebrate with a
modest feast that night. The villagers seem to have some trouble scraping
up the promised 15gp's, but Dersh is the only one who accepts his share.
Slate (now a cleric) is in need of a holy symbol, and commissions the
local blacksmith to platinum-plate a shrunken skull, which serves nicely.
After a week in Erybend, the party set out for Greyhawk on the
barge. One of the locals has agreed to come along to drive the barge, and
before the party depart a small monument to The Passing is set up at the
site of the battle, marking the graves of Jed and Garth. Los decides to
give one of the longswords recovered by the party to a local farmboy, just
because.
Two days journey south on the barge pass uneventfully, and the
party stop at Blackfair Manor Keep. The local guards warn of some flying
creatures of some description that have been spotted recently, but the
party press on, and get to the town of Two Ford by evening. Slate sleeps
on the barge and the rest of the party stay in an Inn for the night. In
the common room that evening, Los, Greebo and Dersh find themselves
talking to an affable Druid, who talks his way into being given a lift on
the barge to Greyhawk. In the morning the group set out once more along
the river.
As the days passes by, nothing much occurs on the small barge until Slate
leans over the side and declares "Is that a fish?". This is soon followed
by a loud splash, and the sight of an armour clad dwarf sinking to the
bottom. Dersh (not wearing his armour) dives into the water after the
dwarf, and Greebo begins to cast a 'lasting breath' spell, which he had
wisely learned (but doesn't fancy his chances of working unless the dwarf
knows it's a friendly spell). Greebo can't really see Slate below the
water, and his spell fizzles. Dersh in the meantime has swam down to
Slate, who is trudging along the riverbed and not looking too happy about
the wateriness of the current situation. Dersh points Slate towards the
bank, and surfaces for air. The rest of the party observe as Slate walks
slowly under the water towards the bank, and up into fresh air after a
couple of rounds. Pondering just how long Slate could hold his breath if
he really wanted to, the party continue upriver.
The day ends, and the party camp on the shore on the forested side
of the river. A thankfully uneventful night passes, and at the end of the
next day the barge pulls in to Ford Keep. Slate opts to stay on the barge
again and guard the stuff, and the rest of the party head for an inn. A
fee of 1sp is to be paid to dock the barge for the night, and a small
dispute occurs as to who should have the honour of making this
donation. Dersh, the only one who took money from the villagers eventually
gets the honour. The rest of the party stay in the Auslander Inn in town,
and Amhar (the druid) picks up the tab.
Next morning the group are once more heading upriver when a small group of
flying creature is spotted in the distance. Realising that these might be
the critters that they were warned of, Slate and Los load their
heavy-crossbows, and Amhar sets about waking the meditating Greebo. Both
Slate and Los miss with the now dwindling supply of magical crossbow
bolts, giving indication of the toughness of the creatures. The flying
creatures close to about 40 yards, and then.. multiply. Where there were
three, there now are seven. Two appear different. One seems fiery in
nature, the other lizardine. The lizard creature begins fighting (by
casting 'magic missile' it seems) with one of the normal (?) ones, and the
rest close to attack. At the moment the barge is in the middle of the
river, and Slate shouts to Bob, the puntsman, to get it to shore. Dersh
misses the creatures with a volley of thrown darts, and Slate and Los both
winch their crossbows. Amhar finally succeeds in kicking Greebo awake, and
the flying imp things attack.
They seem to spit balls of smoke at the party on the raft, and hit
with every last one, leaving the party virtually blinded by the smoke. The
group's limited missile weapons are relatively useless firing blind out of
smoke, and Los seems to be taking the brunt of the attacks from the little
critters.
Bob manages to move the barge out of the cloud of smoke, but Los and
Greebo, at the front of the barge continue to take more damage. At this
point Los opts to use his healing ability upon himself, and Greebo falls
under the continuing hail of smokeballs, but not before injuring a few of
the imp things with some 'magic missiles'. Dersh, throwing daggers, Amhar,
with sling, and Slate, with crossbow, continue to attack the flying
creatures, but only Amhar and Slate hit, and only once apiece before the
continued hail forces Amhar to stop and make attempt at healing
Greebo. Greebo is restored to health, and resumes firing 'magic missiles'.
Bob is doing his best to get the barge to shore, but for the most
part it is covered in a cloud of smoke. Los soon falls, and remains down
when Amhar fizzles a 'cure light wounds' spell. Slate continues to winch
and fire his crossbow, and Dersh throws and exhausts his supply of darts
and daggers. Amhar is now the target for the imp things. Greebo has
exhausted his supply of spells, and searches for the small fireball
casting ring. The barge drifts into smoke as Bob directs the craft to
shore, and from within is the sound of Greebo giving a yelp, and him
falling.
Things continue in the same vein, with the creatures concentrating on one
person at a time, when, everyone lurches forward, Slate goes tumbling into
the water, and the barge comes to a halt on shore. The druid drops next,
and the imps move to begin attacking Slate. Slate trudges out of the
water, and manages to surprise one of the imps (who was fluttering out of
axe range) with his axe-twirled-round-the-head-on-a-chain manner of
attacking, before the imps take to fluttering a few feet higher. Slate
decides it is time to heal Los, but takes about three rounds to get back
onto the barge, during which time Dersh finds the fireball ring, and
manages to injure a couple of the creatures.
Slate eventually heals Los, and at this point Los, Dersh and Slate are on
the barge, and about three or four of creatures are still flying around,
all attacking Slate. The imps are smart enough to stay out of melee weapon
range, but Los decides to go for a bit of a jump and a swipe at one that
just might be in range.. he stuffs up. He leaps into the air, the sword
flies from his hand just missing Slate, and Los lands in the shallow water
beside the barge. At the same time Dersh messes up when using the ring and
aims low instead of high, and hits Los who is now in the water. All this
time Slate still being blasted.
Dersh fires the ring one last time before the red crystal goes
pale, but at least having injured a few of them before it ran out. Los
takes to throwing daggers, and has more success than Dersh did, and kills
one of them. At this point the fiery critter moves beside Los to attack
him, seeing that he is near death. Los attacks back with gauntleted hand,
and Dersh moves across the barge to attack the fiery one too. Slate is
stuck being attacked by two of the flying creatures, and getting low on
health. He tries to run along the barge and onto the shore, but trips over
the pile of armour and falls on his face. The fiery creature finishes off
Los, who falls back into the water, unconscious or dead.
Dersh has one more attack at the flaming creature, and Slate gets onto his
feet, before both decide it is time to run, and play dead if possible.
Slate and Dersh take off, and it is only a matter of feet before
Slate is blasted again, and takes a dive. Dersh continues running, but the
creatures easily catch up. Dersh is hit by a smoke blast, and he too
falls, playing dead.
The creatures are not to be fooled. As Dersh's hands are being bound, the
fiery creature brushes against him, causing him to squirm. The game is
up. Dersh attacks the fire imp thing with his shortsword before it has
time to take off, and kills it. Surveying the surrounds Dersh sees that
Slate's deception has been found out too, and that Slate is being attacked
by the last two of the creatures. Weighing the options, Dersh runs in to
Slates assistance, but too late, and Slate falls. As Slate falls Dersh
continues to run towards the water, but is hit by two of the unerring
smokeballs, and falls unconscious.
Dersh awakes hours(?) later, finding himself bound, and slumped on
a gently swaying barge. Listening for noise, he detects the fluttering of
wings somewhere above him. Opting to remain still, and presuming the
creatures can't tell a dead human from an unconscious one,
Dersh.. coughs. The two creatures flutter down to the barge, seemingly
pleased at finding one of their captives alive, because they get to kill
it. They chatter evilly to each other, and point at the wounds caused by
the party, before blasting Dersh to death.
And so it came to pass that everyone died.
Slate the unkillable was killed.
Los the Paladin failed to rid the lands of undead.
Greebo the parrot finally stopped talking.
Dersh was ridden of his bounty of too much magic stuff without
having earned it.
Amhar the druid should have taken another boat.
And someone is Greyhawk is probably looking for five people to
team up with.
humbug.
